Borussia Dortmund and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Liverpool’s Sadio Mane have backed the announcement of Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez as the 2016 African footballer of the year.

The Leicester City forward emerged as 2016 CAF footballer of the year on Thursday, beating off competition from Aubameyang and Mane at the Glo-Caf gala in Abuja.

They said Mahrez, who won the English Premier League title with Leicester City last season, truly deserved the award.

Aubameyang said, “I think Riyad [Mahrez] deserved the award because he achieved something very big last season. “Of course, he won the Premier League title and also best player of the season. “I think this is normal.

And all I want to do now is work hard this season to come back here to compete.” Mane, who is also preparing for the nations cup, told reporters that the Algerian was an undisputable winner of the CAF coveted individual award.

He said, “For Mahrez, I think he deserved it and I’m very happy for him. “Everybody here knows he had a very fantastic season with Leicester City. So I’m happy for him because he deserves it.”
